New Year’s Computer Resolutions

12/28/2015

I will backup my data
If you value any of the data on your computer and it would cause you grief to lose it, you should be doing regular backups of your data. You can do that with a flash drive, an external hard drive and/or with an offsite location. “Lost” data is often retrievable--for a price. The problem is that after your hard drive crashes, that price could have you seriously regretting the fact that you didn’t back up your data. It’s always best to be proactive and to do frequent backups so you never have to pay that price. We’re happy to help you with this process, and strongly recommend you start sooner rather than later.

I will not use food or drink by my computer
Don’t eat or drink by your computer. Spills happen and computers really don’t like conductive liquids like soda, water, beer, etc. Keyboards don’t like crumbs either, so eating Christmas cookies while typing thank-you letters to family is a no-no.

I will clean my computer regularly
Clean the dust out of your computer every 1-3 months. If you have a laptop, use a can of compressed air and blow out the fan intake on the bottom and the vent on the side or back. If you have a desktop, disconnect the wires and remove the side cover, step outside and use a can of compressed air to blow out the inside of the case. A dusty computer creates and holds more heat, using more energy and causing more wear on the parts. Disconnect your keyboard, turn it upside down and blow air through the keys. A clean computer is a happy computer!

I will unplug my computer during storms
Regardless of whether your power cord is plugged into a surge protector, it’s best to unplug your computer when a storm is rolling through. Unplug any cords leading to and from your computer, including your Internet cable.

I will use quality anti-virus software on my computer
Antivirus software varies greatly in the quality options it provides. Oftentimes, free software leaves many security holes. At Yellowstone Computing, we work hard to stay up to date on which anti-virus and anti-malware software is working well. Feel free to call us and find out whether your software is currently getting good industry reviews, or if it’s going to leave your system in a compromised position.

I won’t download “free” programs
Remember that most “free” software comes with some kind of cost, usually in the form of unwanted and potentially dangerous software. Whenever you download something off the Web read each screen before clicking “next.” You can also hover your cursor over a link to see the address it actually goes to.

I won’t sleep with my phone by my bed
The impact of EMFs (Electro Magnetic Frequencies/radiation) from electronic devices on our health is an area of study that still in its infancy. What we do know is that there is great concern that the devices around you may negatively impact your health, especially with frequent use over time. One way to limit your exposure is to keep your phone away from your bedside while you sleep. If you must use your phone as an alarm, turn it on “airplane mode” to limit what you’re being exposed to.

I will be intentional to live in the present and not live online
One of the tragedies in this generation is that we’re missing the precious moments happening in the lives of our families and friends because we’re on our tablets or phones. At the end of your life, will you regret the funny things you didn’t post to your Facebook page, or will you regret the many moments of your family’s life that you missed because you were on Facebook? As much as our business revolves around enhancing our customer’s lives by providing support for their technical needs, we’re constantly being reminded that technology is only a tool, and we want to use it wisely. For us, this means being intentional to get off of our devices and spend time with our family and friends. To live “in real life” rather than living in the cyber world.

A word of Thanks
We’d like to take a moment to thank all of our customers for your patronage during 2015. This past year has seen much growth for our business and we wouldn’t be here without you! We have many exciting plans for the coming year and we look forward to sharing them with you. God’s blessings to you all, Joe, Tiffany and family.
